Sürmene
Sürmene’nin tarihini Doğu Karadeniz Bölgesinin genel tarihi içinde ve onunla bir bütün olarak ele almalıyız. Karadeniz kıyısı boyunca sahile paralel olarak uzanan dağlar doğuya doğru gidildikçe sahile daha dik olarak iner. Sahilde yerleşimi mümkün kılacak düz alanlar yok denecek kadar az, bol yağmur nedeniyle dağlar orman ve sık bitki örtüsü ile kaplıdır. Vadilerde oluşan dereler sahilden iç kesime ulaşım için doğal bir geçiş yolları oluşturmaktadır.

Bölge kültürünün, batı dünyası ile ilk tanışmasına dair efsaneler,genç bronz çağı dönemine atfedilen ve mitolojik Yunan kahramanlarının yolculuklarını anlatan öykülerdir. Eski Yunan mitolojisinde önemli bir yer tutan bu öykülerde Doğu Karadeniz sahilleri ‘KOLCHİS’,burada yaşayan insanlarda ‘KOLCHİ’ adıyla anılır. Eski Yunan denizcilerinin bu yolculukları zamanla ticari faaliyetlere dönüşerek bölge sahillerinde Pazar yerlerinin kurulmasına yol açtı.

MÖ.500 yıllarında bu Pazar yerleri kolonici tüccarlara ait iskelelere dönüşmesi ile Xenophon tarafından yazılan Anabasis adlı eserde Doğu Karadeniz bölgesinde TRAPEZOS isimli ilk yunan kolonisinden bahsedilmektedir.

Daha sonraki çağlara ait tarihsel kayıtlarda Tzani adıyla anılan Doğu Karadeniz dağlı yerlileri ile karşılaşan Yunanlılar bunlarla dost olarak sahillere ulaşmayı başarmalarına rağmen daha sahilde yaşayan Kolşi’lerle pek dost olamamışlardır. MÖ. 335 yılında kendi parasını basan yunan kolonisi Trapezos uzunca bir süre serbest bir ticaret bölgesi olarak bölgenin yerli halkıyla batı dünyası arasındaki köprü olmuştur.

MÖ. 114 yılında Anadolu’da Romalılarla egemenlik mücadelesine giren İran menşeli Mithridat VI Trapezos ve çevresini hakimiyeti altına alır. Fakat bir sonraki yüzyılda egemenlik tekrar Romalılara geçer. Fakat bu egemenlik değişmelerinden bölgenin yerli halkı etkilenmediği sonraki asırlardaki kayıtlardan anlaşılmaktadır.

MS.I yüzyıla ait bir haritadan geliştirildiği düşünülen Tabula Peutingeriana isimli bir Roma yol kılavuzu,muhtemelen günümüzdeki ile ilişkili gibi görünen yerleşime dair en eski bilgiyi içermektedir. Bu belgede geçen HYSSİLİME adının bugünkü Sürmene olduğu söylenebilir. Bu belgeye göre Trapezunte’den sonra Hyssilime daha sonra da Opiunte gelmektedir ve Hyssilime; sahilde Trapezunte ile Opiunte arasında bir Roma askeri istasyonu olarak görülmektedir.

MS.550 yıllarının başında gemiyle Traapezus’dan doğuya seyahat eden Prokopius, ‘Trapezunt bölgesinden SUSURMENA köyüne ve Rize denilen yere varılır ’ bilgisini seyahatnamesine ekler. Prokopius, TZANİKA memleketi olarak adlandırdığı bölgenin yüksek kesimlerine yaptığı gezilerde seyahat namesinde anlatmıştır.

Trabzon çevresinin dağlık kesimine ve yerli halkına dair oldukça sağlam bilgiler içeren bu notlara göre asırlar önce Xenophon’nun izlediği güzergahi kullanarak Bayburt tarafından bugünkü Soğanlı dağlarını aşan Prokopius Sürmene ve Of yaylalarının bulunduğu yerleri gecerek Trapezus’a ulaşmıştır. Bu yolculuğu sırasında bugünkü Sürmene, Of yaylaları ile ilgili gözlemleri ve orada karşılaştığı dağlı yerlilerin yaşam biçimleri ile ilgili aktardığı bilgiler bölgenin bugünkü kültürel dokusunun kökleri ile ilgili önemli ipuçları vermektedir. Bu tarihlerden sonra Doğu Karadeniz bölgesi genellikle Bizanslıların hakimiyeti altında olmasına rağmen zaman zaman İranlılar, Avarlar arasında hakimiyetler değişmiştir.

İslamiyet’in ortaya çıkması ile güçlenen Araplarla Bizanslılar arasında savaşlar devam etmiş ve 715 yılında Müslüman Arapların Anadolu’ya yaptıkları seferde Trbzon’uda kısa bir süre hakimiyetleri altına almışlardır. Araplarla Bizanslıların mücadelesi X. Yüzyıl sonuna kadar devam etmektedir. Bu tarihten sonra Anadolu’ya Türk akınları başlamıştır. Malazgirt savaşı ile Anadolu’ya giren Türkler Anadolu’da bazı bölgelerde hakimiyet alanları oluşturmaya başladı.

Malazgirt savaşı ile Bizans içinde başlayan karışıklıklar sonucu Gürcistan kraliçesi Thamar’ın yardımıyla Trabzon’da Trabzon Rum İmparatorluğu Kommenos hanedanı tarafından kurulur (1204 1222). Bu tarihten sonra Trabzon yöresi ve Karadeniz bölgesi bir çok Türk boylarının akınına uğramış bazen hakimiyet sağlanmış bazen savaşlar kaybedilmiştir. Trabzon’un Türkler tarafından kesin alınışı 1461 yılında Fatih Sultan Mehmet tarafından gerçekleştirilir.
